Vaccination of Pregnant Women against Whooping Cough

There has been an increase in the number of people diagnosed with whooping cough in the UK since mid 2011, and the current outbreak is the largest for ten years.

Babies will normally receive a vaccination against whooping cough, amongst other diseases, in the course of the routine vaccination programme which begins at 8 weeks after birth.

 However to offer protection to babies during those first 8 weeks, when they may be at risk and vulnerable to a disease such as whooping cough, the government has introduced a vaccination programme, offering the whooping cough vaccination to pregnant women, after week 28 of their pregnancy.  This will provide their baby with protection for that period from birth to 8 weeks or whenever the first vaccination takes place.

The best time to vaccinate is between 28-38 weeks of pregnancy.

If you are between 28-38 weeks pregnant we would urge you to telephone the surgery and make an appointment with the nurses as soon as possible to receive your vaccination. Please click here for more information.

Patients requiring prescriptions for the Contraceptive Pill are kindly reminded that they must allow 48 hours, following their consultation with a practice nurse, before they will be able to collect their prescriptions as these are issued by one of the GPs and not by the practice nurses.
